Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is based on the premise that the way we think about a situation affects how we act. In turn, our actions can affect how we think and feel. It holds, therefore, that it is necessary to change both the act of thinking (our cognitions) and our behaviour, at the same time, if we are to overcome psychological difficulties, such as depression and anxiety. There are several approaches that come under the umbrella term Humanistic Psychotherapy, including Existential Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy and Transactional Analysis. While each approach has its own particular theory and therapeutic practice models, they all emphasise the independent dignity and worth of human beings and their conscious capacity to develop personal competence, autonomy and self-respect. Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychological treatment which was originally aimed at helping people deal with traumatic memories and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Over the years, in addition to traumatic memories and PTSD, EMDR has been increasingly used with a wide range of problems including grief, anxiety, performance anxiety, panic disorder, phobias, and a wide range of emotional problems arising from difficult childhood experiences.
EMDR is well researched and has been found to be effective in dealing with these sorts of problems. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines recommend EMDR as a treatment of choice for adults with PTSD.
The length of treatment varies depending on the nature of the problem. EMDR can achieve results extremely quickly in as little as 3-5 sessions, and for other people treatment may take longer. Evidence suggests that EMDR is the quickest psychological treatment for traumatic memories and PTSD.

Psychodynamic Theory was pioneered by Sigmund Freud in the late nineteenth century and has since been continually developed and researched. Psychodynamic Theory explores the role of the unconscious in the development of psychological difficulties. In particular, it advocates that it is underlying conflicts in the unconscious that cause psychological stress. Through exploration of early attachments in childhood and current relationship patterns a greater understanding of what these unconscious drives/impulses are and how they motivate behaviour and feelings is gained.
Systemic therapy sees people in the context of their patterns of relationships rather than as individuals in isolation. Systemic therapy is the process of addressing difficulties not by focusing on the problem but by focusing on the solution. This type of therapy can be used with individuals, couples and families and involves thinking about people’s difficulties and solutions to these difficulties from a number of different perspectives.
